In the winter of 1461-62, Vlad III of Wallachia impaled thousands along the Danube and left the dead standing as a warning. A handful of villagers are sent into the field of stakes to take down and bless the dead before the storm. Among the bodies they find a young woman who died carrying a child. With no time for rites, they leave the child unbaptized, and as the blizzard swallows the field, something begins to hunt them.
