Sora is gone: the 5 best alternatives for AI video (November 2026)

The Sora app is closed, the API is closed, and no successor has been announced. Kling 4.0 has just arrived and Seedance 2.5 can now do 30 seconds in one go. Here is what to use instead, based on what is really available this month.

Is Sora really gone?

Yes. According to OpenAI's help center, the Sora web and app experiences were discontinued on April 26, 2026, and the Sora API on September 24, 2026. If you still see a site offering “Sora” today, it is not OpenAI: treat it with suspicion, and do not pay until you have checked who runs it.

If you had videos in Sora, assume that anything you did not export is gone, and check OpenAI's help page for what still applies to your account.

Prices checked in early November 2026. They change often, and different sites report different figures, especially for Kling 4.0 and Seedance 2.5. Always confirm on the official page before you pay.

Kling 4.0: the newest arrival

Kuaishou rolled out Kling 4.0 in stages: an early Flash version for top subscribers at the end of September, then the full model in mid-October. The headline change is a single generation of 3 to 30 seconds, double the 15 seconds of Kling 3.0, with stereo sound.

Kling also announces 4K and HDR output, extra reference assets and keyframes. Reports differ on which of these every user can access today, so test the plan you are considering with a single short clip before you commit to a whole episode.

Seedance 2.5: the favorite of AI filmmakers

ByteDance's model generates up to 30 seconds of video and sound, and it is especially good at scenes with several connected shots. It is also the tool we see most on DeepStories: when we counted credits across 130 titles, Seedance appeared on about half of them.

It is not cheap. On Dreamina's entry plan, reported at $15 a month for 1,575 credits, Seedance 2.5 at 37 credits per second gives you about 42 seconds of 720p per month. That is enough for a test, not for a series, so plan your shots before you generate.

Google Flow: Veo 3.1 and Gemini Omni

Google's Flow brings its video models together. Google now also has Gemini Omni Flash, and the official subscription page lists it in Flow for its plans, alongside a limited trial of Veo 3.1 Lite on Google AI Pro.

Veo 4 is the rumor you will see everywhere. As of mid-October, Google had not published anything confirming it, so do not wait for it.

Runway and Hailuo: control or budget

Runway is the one to choose when you want to direct and edit rather than only generate, with Gen-4.5 as its flagship in the reports we read. At a reported 12 credits per second, the Standard plan's 625 credits cover about 52 seconds per month.

Hailuo, from MiniMax, remains a good choice for energetic, physical action on a modest budget.

Moving your Sora prompts: a method that works

Sora prompts were often long, written descriptions of a whole scene. The current tools reward something else: one shot at a time, a clear subject, one camera move and a reference image of the character.

Paste your old prompt into a chat assistant with the text below. It breaks the scene into shots that you can generate one by one.

Here is an old AI video prompt that describes a whole scene: [PASTE YOUR PROMPT].
Rewrite it as a shot list for a modern AI video generator.
For each shot, give: shot size, subject and action in one sentence, one camera move, lighting, sound, and duration (5 to 15 seconds).
Keep the same character description word for word in every shot.
Do not add any text on screen.

What about free or open models?

If you have a strong graphics card, open models such as LTX-2 and Wan can run on your own computer: no subscription, but more setup and more time per shot. For most people without one, the cheapest realistic path is a free allowance for tests and one paid month when your shot list is ready.

FAQ

When did Sora shut down?

OpenAI's help center gives April 26, 2026 for the web and app experiences, and September 24, 2026 for the API.

What is the best free alternative to Sora?

For a free allowance, try Kling or Hailuo. Expect limits such as a watermark or low resolution. For truly free generation, open models run on your own computer if you have a strong graphics card.

Is Kling 4.0 better than Seedance 2.5?

They both reach 30 seconds. Kling 4.0 is newer and stands out for long shots with sound; Seedance 2.5 is widely used for cinematic scenes with several shots. Test the same shot in both before you choose.

Has OpenAI announced a replacement for Sora?

Not in the reports we checked. They mention no successor to the Sora video models.

Is Veo 4 out?

As of mid-October 2026, Google had published no Veo 4 announcement or release date. Veo 3.1 and Gemini Omni are what is available.

Can I still download my old Sora videos?

Assume not. Check OpenAI's help page “What to know about the Sora discontinuation” for your account.
